Books! Books! Books!

July 18th, 2010

My tolerant husband always says “If books were bricks, we could build another house.” That may be true, but a day without a book, is a sad day indeed. Here are the books that play with my brain cells, or entertain me, inspire me or just make me smile!

My current absolute MUST read is “Women, Food and God” by Geneen Roth. Look her up on http://www.geneenroth.com/

It is quite a confronting and thought-provoking book on why we overeat. I realized that I do eat to avoid feeling certain things and this book has inspired my commitment to trying not to diet for a year, but rather fuel my body and deal with emotions that bubble underneath the surface! You will see how I go…

My darling friend Maria says we have to read “When Hungry Eat” by Joanne Fedler. A memoir of a migrant who left South Africa for Sydney and discovered that she needed a “spiritual spring-clean”. I have read the first two chapters and verdict…Hooked! More, no doubt, later….

Glad to read your blog and books I might like. I might be a bit busy reading all this other stuff though, so your short comments suit me down to the ground. Can’t promise I won’t have some pithy comments of my own.

I completed “The Elegance of the Hedgehog” last week. It is a BEAUTIFUL book, really well written. The second half is poignant and touching as well as funny and real.

Another great book, I finished on the weekend, in between Nurofen Plusses, was “Jasper Jones” by Craig Silvey. Silvey is a new Australian writer, who has written a gripping story in the genre of “Tom Sawyer” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.” It is such a great reminder on the perspectives we all had as teenagers, the views of the world, friendships and secrets…this is going to become a classic and no doubt a set work book at school…

I am currently reading – “Eastern Body, Western Mind – The Psychology of the Chakra System as a Path to Self” by Anodea Judith. Phenomenal. Really enjoying it! It is Jung meets Buddha and falls in love 🙂

Right, the irony of this posting has not escaped me! But “Hamlet’s Blackberry” is making me think BIG time. Wow! It is a view of how we are so “connected” in cyberspace that it is impacting our thinking and relating. the need to always be switched on and responding. I love the easy style it is written in, it took me two hours to punch through half the book…more when I am done…
